Throughout the history, there has been varying approaches to the translation of Sappho’s poems. For instance, there have been times when they were turned into lyrical poems, written by a man for a woman.
If your target language is one that requires a gender distinction in the first person pronoun (e.g. Japanese), or one that distinguishes between male and female through suffixes added on to verbs, adjectives or nouns (e.g. Romance languages, Russian) then you will have to decide who your narrator/poet will be. This will probably depend on the attitudes towards lesbian poetry in your target culture/ language/ literary system and on your own attitudes. Being aware of these attitudes and of the importance of your own ‘agency’ will ultimately lead you to informed decisions.
