Whereas a prescriptive approach would look for ways to improve the translation (or translations like this, in future), a descriptivist is more likely to ask questions like:
Who made this translation?
What circumstances lead to a situation in which non-native speakers produce translations into a foreign language?
How did this text actually come into being? Was it done in-house, given to an agency, etc.?
How does this translation compare to other translations of the same category (translations on packets of tea, goods for sale at Shanghai airport, etc.)?
What impact does a translation like this have? Are buyers put off by it or do they perhaps appreciate it as a sign of authenticity?
Does this type of translation have a history?
