We may want to speak of translation studies as an academic discipline today. What is needed for something to become a ‘discipline’ in this sense?
The diagram showing different branches of the study of translation is based on James Holmes’ essay ‘The Name and Nature of Translation’ (1972). Holmes himself however did not produce a diagram with his essay (the diagram was the work of Gideon Toury). It is worth thinking about the two different forms of presentation, diagram versus discursive text. What does the diagram do that a discursive presentation does not do? And vice versa, what does the discursive presentation do that a diagram does not do?
